Why Zagreb

Zagreb is small enough to learn in two days and interesting enough to hold you for five. The historic core is roughly a mile across and mostly flat, with one hill you can climb or ride by funicular. Trams cost very little for a short hop. A woman sitting alone over one coffee at an outdoor table for ninety minutes is the city’s default posture, not an oddity. English is widely spoken in hospitality and among younger people. Prices are perhaps a third below Vienna’s, and Dubrovnik’s July crowds do not exist here.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

How Eating Works Here

Lunch Is the Meal. Croatian restaurant kitchens do their best work in the middle of the day, the rooms are calmer, and the gablec, the weekday set lunch of typically soup and a main for a fixed low price, is very good value. It is aimed at office workers, it changes daily, and it is usually chalked up rather than printed.

Eat your main meal at lunch and go light in the evening. It is what the city does, it is cheaper, and it leaves the evening free.

Portions. Large. Traditional Croatian restaurants serve a main course that would feed two people in France. A starter as well is a decision. Salads are usually ordered separately and arrive alongside rather than before.
