Why Kotor, and Why Now

Kotor is a working town and one of the Adriatic’s busiest cruise ports, and that tension shapes every visit. On cruise mornings several thousand passengers pour through the single main gate and the small walled Old Town is briefly overwhelmed; the crowds leave by late afternoon. Timing is the whole strategy: the early mornings before the ships disembark and the evenings after they sail give you the living city, while midday on a two- or three-ship day gives you the crush. (How to check the schedule is under Timing Around the Cruise Ships in Conversation Notes.)

High mountains rise straight from the water of the Bay of Kotor, which has earned it the popular billing of Europe’s southernmost fjord, though geologists classify it as a ria, a drowned river canyon (see Is It Really a Fjord? in Conversation Notes). For centuries those mountains enclosed the bay’s towns, each with its own traditions and dialect.

How Kotor Dining Works

Dining alone is unremarkable in Kotor, and no one expects you to eat quickly. Ask for the table you want: a table on Milk Square at Pepe Nero to watch the town go by, or the courtyard at Konoba Scala Santa near Salad Square for something calmer. In the smaller Old Town konobas, conversation with whoever is serving tends to follow on its own.

Seating varies: a host may put a single diner at a larger table near others or at a small table facing the room. On the terraces of Trg od Oružja, ask for a table at the edge if you want to watch the square.

The places nearest the Sea Gate and the main square cater mostly to visitors, cost more and adapt more readily to dietary requests; the konobas in the side lanes and the grills outside the walls, such as BBQ Tanjga, cost less and show you how residents eat.
