Alone

Castle Hill watches over the Ljubljanica, a slow brown river lined with trees. In summer, cafés along its banks set tables by the water, inviting a pause between walks through the old center.

Ljubljana: A City Small Enough to Know and Large Enough to Surprise

Four days is enough to know it well. The old town sits along the Ljubljanica, pressed against Castle Hill, and nearly everything you came to see is in that center. The residential districts beyond, such as Šiška, Tabor and the streets around Tivoli Park, are where the city lives and works, and they are worth a half day if you have time.

Three things make it a good city to visit alone.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Solo Dining

The riverside restaurants put small tables along the water, and single tables are not held back for larger parties. At the Central Market you can eat standing or on a bench; wine bars such as Šuklje and Vinoteka Movia pour by the glass with small plates; and a single coffee at Kavarna Zvezda buys the table for as long as you want it.

You will usually be seated without comment at a table for two or four, depending on what is free. Linger over wine at Šuklje or eat a sausage in fifteen minutes at Klobasarna; the staff leave you to it either way. The indifference is a courtesy: you are neither performed for nor managed.

The easiest stretch is the south bank of the old town, where the cafes are many and the tables small: face the river and the passing crowd, or take a corner table against the river wall.
