SAMPLE

Why Split, and Why Now

Split is cheaper, less overtly touristy than the coastal towns further south, and people still live in its oldest streets.

A dinner of whole grilled fish, bread and a glass of wine fits a moderate budget, and the palace itself is a free public space you walk through as you would any street. The museums inside the palace are modest to enter. (Hotel prices are under Budget in Planning Your Escape.)

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Eating Alone, Setting by Setting

A neighborhood konoba such as Konoba Marjan above Varoš: look at the day’s catch on the counter, ask the server what is good today, and stay as long as you like (see The Konoba Tradition in The Pleasures of the Table).

The Riva cafés: come at four with a book and watch the ferries.

Wine bars: take the counter at Bokeria or Zinfandel, order by the glass with a small plate, and watch the bar work.

Restaurants: book ahead and say the table is for one; the counter at Krug and the stools at Villa Spiza are made for a single diner.

Breakfast and coffee: the easiest meals to eat alone; kava2 and D16 Coffee are under Coffee and Breakfast.
