Arrival and First Impressions

From the water, the old town cascades down its hill in terracotta roofs and pale stone, with the bell tower of St. Euphemia rising from the center, and by catamaran you motor into the harbor directly beneath it. By road from Pula you pass through newer construction first; then the road curves and the peninsula appears across the bay. Arrival details, including the two-leg bus from Pula Airport, are under Getting There below.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Eating Alone

The practicalities of eating by yourself here (when to arrive, what to bring, how the pace works) are set out in How Rovinj Dining Works, earlier in this book. The short version: it is unremarkable, you will be given a proper table, and nobody will rush you. By base, the named places in this chapter sort like this. Old town: breakfast at Bookeria or Buffet Trevisol, lunch at Pizzeria Stari Grad or Grongo E Alice, dinner at Giannino, Santa Croce or Restaurant Dream, and La Puntulina for the occasion. Harbor: Al Ponto Caffè for the first coffee, Riva Bistro or Al Dente for a table watching the boats, Fish House Rovinj for seafood. Valdibora: the Graciano terrace for lunch or an early dinner. Grand Park and the marina: Agli Amici and Cap Aureo. Lone Bay and Monte Mulini: the hotel restaurants, or the 10–15 minute walk back along the coast to the harbor.
