Ohrid Awaits

The city of Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the rare dual designation: cultural heritage for its dense concentration of medieval churches and monuments, and natural heritage for the lake and its endemic life. The Byzantine churches with their surviving frescoes, the Ottoman-era bazaar lanes, the ancient theater, the fortress walls: none of these sit behind glass as museum pieces. People walk through them and live among them.

Much of the appeal begins with Ohrid’s manageable size and walkable geography. The Old Town, the Stara Čaršija, holds the most historically significant streets and can be crossed on foot in fifteen or twenty minutes. The city is large enough to contain real complexity (distinct neighborhoods, dozens of churches, a working local life that has nothing to do with tourism). It is also small enough that you can hold it in your head, and find your way within days. Take a wrong turn and you will find your way out within minutes.
