SAMPLE
San Miguel de Allende is a hill town that a large and long-established American and Canadian community has made unusually easy for a woman traveling alone. Both halves of that sentence matter before you book a flight.
The ease is real. English is spoken at the front desk of most hotels, in most of the better restaurants, and by a fair share of the shopkeepers in the historic center. Airport shuttles run on a known schedule to a known destination. A woman eating alone at a corner table around the Jardín is a completely unremarkable sight, because thousands of women have eaten alone at that same corner table before her, many of them retirees who now live here six months of the year. Spanish helps, and you will need less of it here than almost anywhere else in Mexico.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE
Eating alone in San Miguel de Allende is genuinely easy, and the reasons are specific. The town’s restaurant culture is heavily shaped by decades of solo and small-group foreign visitors and residents, which means a single diner asking for a table is a routine request rather than an unusual one, at almost any restaurant around the Jardín. A counter or bar seat, where restaurants have one, is often the most comfortable choice: you are beside the room’s activity, free to read or people-watch, and the logistics of paying and leaving are simpler than at a table set for two. Where a restaurant only offers table seating, ask for a small table near the room’s edge or window rather than accepting whatever is offered first; most hosts will happily reseat you if the first option feels exposed.
