Why Mérida

Mexico City draws the crowds that come for a capital’s density and speed. Oaxaca draws the ones chasing markets and mezcal. Mérida draws a quieter kind of traveler, and it rewards her differently: a colonial capital of pale limestone streets, laid out on a grid the Spanish imposed over a Maya city that had stood on the same ground for over a thousand years, in the flat, hot, low scrubland of the Yucatán Peninsula.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Dining Alone

Eating alone in Mérida is unremarkable. Market comedores, the small family-run kitchens inside markets like Mercado Lucas de Gálvez, are built around solo diners as a matter of course; sit at the counter, order, and you are one of many people eating alone at that counter on any given day. Sit-down restaurants aimed at visitors are equally comfortable for a solo diner, and asking for a table for one draws no particular reaction on the streets described here.

If you would rather not eat in total silence, sitting at a comedor counter in the Mercado Lucas de Gálvez or at the bar of a Calle 60 cantina rather than a table puts you naturally beside other diners and staff, which tends to produce at least some conversation without requiring you to seek it out.
