Why Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta gets filed too quickly under package-vacation Mexico: an airport code, a strip of resorts, a name recognized from a wedding invitation or a cruise itinerary rather than from the town itself. That reputation is not wrong, exactly. The town built its economy on precisely that kind of tourism, and the hotel corridor north of the river delivers it without apology. But there is a working Mexican city underneath the resorts: a cobbled center, a river coming down out of the mountains, a boardwalk that fills with families at seven in the evening, a parish church with an improbable crown on its tower. Roughly three hundred thousand people live here and go on living here regardless of who is passing through. The Puerto Vallarta worth a week of anyone’s time is not the one most itineraries show.

Safety, by Area and Hour

Puerto Vallarta’s tourist core of Centro, the Malecón and the Zona Romántica is well lit, busy well into the evening, and patrolled by a visible tourist-police presence on the highest-traffic blocks. Safety varies by street and by hour rather than holding constant across a whole town, and that is the useful frame. Calle Olas Altas and Calle Basilio Badillo stay lively late. The quieter residential streets climbing into Cinco de Diciembre and Versalles thin out earlier and want more attention after dark. Neighborhood by Neighborhood notes the pattern for each district; Practical Matters carries the State Department advisory. If a security alert is issued while you are here, stay where you are, keep your phone charged, and follow your hotel’s and the consulate’s instructions rather than social media.
