Why This Isn’t About Romeo and Juliet

Verona is not the city of Shakespeare’s fictional lovers. The tour groups crowd the balcony on Via Cappello; the reason to come is one of Italy’s most intact medieval and Renaissance cities.

The city walls were built up in layers across two thousand years: Roman gates such as the Porta Borsari and Porta Leoni first, then medieval, Scaliger, Venetian and finally Austrian fortifications. You can go down into the crypt at San Zeno, sit in an amphitheater that still stages opera, and eat lunch in a piazza that has been a gathering place for over a thousand years.

Verona suits a traveler who would rather spend an afternoon in Castelvecchio, or three hours over lunch near Piazza delle Erbe, than collect a new city every day, and who likes knowing what she is looking at.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Budget Eating: How to Stretch the Euros

Pizza by the slice (al taglio): a substantial lunch for very little. Verona has some very good pizza bars.

Sandwich shops (paninoteca): a sandwich of salumi, cheese, and roasted vegetables on fresh bread, cheap and filling.

Lunch specials: many osterie offer a lunch menu (piatti del giorno, “plates of the day”); ask what is included and the price.

Self-catering: buy cheese, salumi, bread, fruit and wine from shops and make a meal in your hotel room, for a fraction of a restaurant bill.

Pasta e fagioli (pasta and beans): many osterie serve it.

Fresh pasta, on the spot: at La Bottega della Gina (Via Abramo Massalongo 5/a), you point at trays of fresh pasta made daily, and they boil your choice while you wait, to eat at a little table or carry off in a tub. A generous portion is cheap, and the pasta is folded behind the counter in front of you. Check its closing days before you go. La Figaccia makes excellent focaccia panini, baked fresh, ideal for a bench lunch by the river. Both are cheap, honest and untroubled by a single customer.
