The Amalfi Coast Awaits

In spring the lemon groves are in blossom and the air smells of them; later in the year it smells of salt, of wood smoke from pizzeria ovens, and of the wild rosemary and thyme growing in the gaps of retaining walls.

Alone, you set the pace: twenty minutes at the ferry rail while Positano comes into view, two hours over a coffee and a notebook at a harborside table in Amalfi, or a stepped alley in Atrani followed to its end.

At a table for one, ask the server which dish came in that morning, and order that. If the next harborside table holds walkers back from the Path of the Gods, ask where they started and how long it took, or whether Cetara’s seafood pasta beats Positano’s.
