Alone

Florence is small enough to cover on foot, so leave the Uffizi when you've looked enough and rest in a café. Evenings belong to aperitivo: a glass of wine and a few snacks at a bar.

How to Structure Your Days

Choose three to five things you want to see, book the big ones before you leave home, go early, and leave the rest of the day loose. Three days covers the Duomo complex, the Uffizi and the Accademia. Five days adds the Oltrarno (Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, the Brancacci Chapel, Santo Spirito in the evening) and the museums east of the Duomo; a sixth day goes to Fiesole or the Tuscan countryside. Day-by-day plans are in Days in Florence.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Eating Alone

A woman dining alone at a neighborhood trattoria is unremarkable, and the staff treat it that way. Counter seating, bar seating, small trattorias, wine bars and market counters are the most comfortable options; at the Mercato Centrale you can eat standing at a vendor’s counter alongside everyone else. Cafés expect you to stay, so you can sit for an hour over one coffee or glass of wine. A book or journal gives you something to do with your hands and spares you meeting the eye of every passer-by. On a stay of a week or longer, pick one trattoria near your base, go back two or three times, and ask what the kitchen is cooking that day.
