A University City

The institution also means that English is widely spoken. The academic culture is international, with researchers and students from across Europe and beyond. That makes finding your way, asking questions, and everyday exchanges easier than in more isolated Norwegian communities.

Even so, the university never dominates. There are student bars and young people everywhere, but there are also fishing boats in the harbor, serious research at the university’s Arctic centers, and a working city that carries on regardless of the academic calendar.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Restaurants and Casual Dining

Tromsø has numerous restaurants across multiple price points and cuisine types. While the emphasis on seafood and Arctic cuisine is natural and often best, other cuisines are represented.

For seafood, Dragøy Coastal Mathus, a seafood deli that serves lunch, works well for a counter seat or small table on your own, and Fiskekompaniet, on Killengreens gate, is a very expensive seafood restaurant, a choice for a special dinner. The better places serve local fish simply rather than hiding it under heavy sauces.

Bardus Bistro, a Scandinavian restaurant, is a calm choice for a meal alone when you want a room rather than a counter, and Casa Inferno, a pizzeria with a low-key room, sits at the moderate end of the local range. For other cuisines, Suvi (sushi and Asian fusion) and Wedeb’s Restaurant (Ethiopian), below, widen the range.
