Why Tallinn Remains Underrated

The medieval Old Town is no secret: it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and crowded in high season and on cruise-ship days. The neighborhoods beyond the walls, the Kadriorg museums and the saunas see a fraction of that foot traffic. Come in the shoulder season, reach the Old Town early or late, and spend at least a day beyond the walls.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Traditional Estonian Food: Understanding Through Eating

Some Estonian staples may be unfamiliar at first: black bread, blood sausage, pickled everything, sauerkraut. They may not appeal on paper, but these foods are good when prepared with respect and quality ingredients.

Rye Bread (Leib): Black rye bread holds a central place in Estonian food. The bread is dense, dark, slightly sweet, and delicious. Bakeries throughout the city make rye bread, but Lee Brasserie (above) has excellent house-made bread. You can also buy loaves at Balti Jaama Market.

Blood Sausage (Verivorstid): The ingredients may be unfamiliar. It’s pork blood mixed with barley and spices, formed into sausages and fried. It has a slightly earthy flavor and a surprising delicacy. You’ll find it at Must Puudel (above) or at the Estonian Open Air Museum café.
