Why Stockholm Works for You

Personal space. What gets called Swedish coldness is mostly an absence of performance: no smiling at strangers to reassure them, no small talk to fill a silence, and an assumption that your presence is enough.

In a Stockholm café a woman alone is rarely asked whether she is waiting for someone, and walking through the city by herself she is seldom approached.

Fika. The daily coffee-and-pastry pause is a structured break, taken seriously enough that offices stop for it, and taken alone as often as in company. A woman of any age sitting with a coffee and a cinnamon bun, lost in thought or a book, is having fika; the ritual, and where to do it, is in The Solo Woman’s Stockholm.

More Places to Eat Alone

Bistro Bestick (Bryggargatan 8, Norrmalm) is a mid-priced Swedish restaurant in the central streets near the station, serving lunch and dinner daily with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. It has indoor and outdoor seating and a full bar, and it takes reservations, which makes it an easy one to slot in after the museums or an afternoon of shopping. Check the current menu and hours before you go.

Tradition (Österlånggatan 1, Gamla Stan) is a mid-priced Swedish restaurant on the Old Town’s waterside lane, cooking classic and contemporary dishes from Swedish and Nordic ingredients, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices. You can book online, and it also keeps a limited drop-in window, so it suits an evening meal after a day in the historic center. Check the current menu and hours before booking.
