Salzburg Is the Gateway, Not the Subject

Most travelers arrive by way of Salzburg. The city itself (the Altstadt, the fortress, the Mozart sites, the Sound of Music tour circuit) has its own guide in this series, Salzburg Alone, and this book does not repeat it. The one Salzburg fact you need here: Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, the main station, is the hub for the regional trains and buses that reach every lake in this book.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Hallstatt: Eating Around the Crowds

Hallstatt’s restaurants sit almost entirely around the market square and the lakefront promenade, and the ones directly on the water charge a premium for the view and see enormous turnover through the middle of the day. A terrace table at lunch during peak season can mean a wait, a menu skewed toward quick-turning dishes, and service stretched thin. The workaround: eat lunch either before eleven or after two, when the day-trip crowds thin, and treat dinner, once most day visitors have left on the last boats and buses, as the better meal of the day here by a wide margin. A handful of Gasthäuser slightly back from the square, a two-minute walk uphill, keep the same lake views with noticeably shorter queues and friendlier prices.
