Berlin Awaits

Berlin works for women 50 and over because it asks for curiosity, not performance. The city is intellectually serious, with world-class museums, contemporary galleries and English-language bookshops, and a week spent among them is an ordinary Berlin week.

The S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses are extensive and easy to learn. Berlin is flat and walkable within each neighborhood, though it sprawls between them. The food is global and affordable, and the city is cheaper than Paris, London or Amsterdam, so the same budget buys a longer stay.

A woman eating, walking or going to a concert alone is unremarkable here. The usual big-city precautions, and the places to take care late at night (Alexanderplatz in the small hours, the bar streets once they empty, the Tiergarten after dark), are in Practical Matters. Several of Berlin’s starred kitchens seat you at a counter, which suits a solo diner; The Pleasures of the Table names them.

How Berlin Dining Works

A few structures make eating here easy. Food halls such as Markthalle Neun and the KaDeWe food hall let you order across several counters and sit at a communal table. Counter seating is standard throughout Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, and Prenzlauer Berg, and at the Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, and Japanese restaurants everywhere in the city: you order, sit at the bar, watch the kitchen work, eat. Wine bars expect a glass and a small plate at the bar instead of a full table. Hotel restaurants are used to guests eating without company. In summer the beer gardens and the restaurants along the Spree and the Landwehr Canal move everything outdoors, and a beer by the water is one of the great Berlin pleasures. Berlin is an excellent picnic city too: buy groceries and take them to Tempelhofer Feld, Tiergarten, or the riverside.
