Why Cologne

It has what is often called the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, with a north transept free to enter if you want to sit. It has twelve great Romanesque churches, older than the cathedral, scattered through the old center. It has a major modern art collection, strong on Pop Art, in a museum four minutes from the train. It has a beer culture with rules, which makes eating alone easy because you always know what to do. And it has the Rhine, with a promenade you can walk for an hour in either direction.
