What Awaits You Here

The Medieval Old Town: One of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities, ringed by defensive walls built by the Knights of St John. The architecture carries the marks of Crusaders, Ottoman rulers, and Italian occupiers, and several thousand people still live inside the walls.

Ancient History Everywhere: The island holds the memory of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Nothing of it survives, but the acropolis at Lindos and the excavated town of Kamiros put classical and Hellenistic Greece underfoot.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

What to Eat

Prices sort themselves into bands rather than needing memorizing: pies, salads, and the small plates are the cheapest tier; the baked and grilled mains a step above; fish dearest of all, and usually priced by weight rather than by portion.

Moussaka: Layered eggplant, potato, meat sauce, and béchamel cheese sauce.

Souvlaki: Meat (pork, chicken, or lamb) cooked on skewers, typically served with pita bread, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber sauce).

Pastitsio: Similar to moussaka but with pasta rather than an eggplant base.

Gemista: Tomatoes and peppers stuffed with rice and herbs and baked, the everyday vegetarian version, lighter than the meat dishes. (A version stuffed with rice and minced meat is also common.)
