Corfu Awaits

The plane banks left over the Ionian Sea, and there it is: a slender green island pressed against the Albanian coastline. Where you expect bleached rock, Corfu shows olive groves, dark cypresses along the ridgelines, and a coastline folded so tightly that every headland hides another cove and another small harbor.

The descent into Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport is dramatic. The runway extends into Chalikiopoulou Lagoon, and on many approaches the plane passes low over the old fortress, the Liston arcade, and Corfu Town’s terracotta rooftops before the wheels touch tarmac.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Safe at Night

Company is easy to find on Corfu if you want it.

In tourist areas you will meet other travelers on their own; in a village taverna you may be the only non-Greek present.

Sitting at one of the Liston cafes facing the Spianada is participatory rather than solitary: everyone is watching everyone else, and conversations start easily. Return to the same cafe at the same hour for a few days and you will be recognized.

A half-day cooking class on Corfiot cuisine (sofrito, pastitsada, kumquat desserts) typically has four to eight participants, a shared meal and local wine, which makes it one of the easiest ways to meet people.

Walking tours of Corfu Town (several operators run them in English) give you two hours of company and local knowledge; ask whether the guide is a Corfiot who knows the Old Town.
