SAMPLE

A Different Kind of Greek Island

Hydra is not the Greece of whitewash and blue domes; it is stone mansions above a working harbor, on an island without cars.

This island in the Saronic Gulf, roughly an hour and a half from Athens by fast boat, has no cars, motorcycles or scooters, and no car rental, traffic or parking. What remains is the architecture, the history, the food, the art, and you.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Dining Alone

The practical reality: arriving alone at a taverna, you’ll be seated, given a menu, and served like anyone else; no special arrangements are needed.

For something to watch, take a harbor-facing table at Piato or Veranda, or bring a book or notebook. A table at the edge of the terrace, rather than in the middle of the room, gives you the view and an easy exit; ask for one when you arrive. For a calmer table for one, Giasemi’s small room and the lemon-tree courtyard at Kryfo Limani are quieter than the harbor front, and Kai Kremmidi’s patio suits a quick souvlaki when a full meal feels like too much.

Timing helps. Lunch, between one and three, is the easiest meal to take alone, and a table at half past seven, before the dinner rush, means a waiter with time to talk you through the board.
