The First Question: Is Oslo for Me?

Oslo suits you if you like design, quiet, nature on the doorstep, and being left alone, and don’t mind paying for it. It suits you if you value design over decoration and function over fuss, and if you have grown tired of destinations that reduce women to their appearance or their role as companions. It does not perform for tourists, does not rush, and does not package an “experience” in Instagram-friendly gloss.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Specific Restaurants Worth Your Attention

Oslo’s restaurants change chefs and names quickly, so check that a place is still trading before you build an evening around it. They are easy to eat at alone.

Vulkanfisk, the seafood bar inside the Mathallen food hall, is an easy and entirely natural place to eat alone: check the current menu for what is on. The shellfish will add up.

Theatercaféen, Stortingsgata 24/26, fills the first and second floors of Hotel Continental opposite the National Theater, serving lunch and dinner in a grand café dining room hung with portraits, with a French-leaning menu. The bar counter is a comfortable seat for a solo diner. Special-occasion prices; reservations are recommended for both meals, and Sunday service starts late in the afternoon.
