Naxos Awaits

Arriving by ferry from Piraeus or Mykonos, the first thing you see is the Portara, the marble gate of an unfinished temple standing alone on an islet at the harbor mouth.

Naxos is larger, greener and more self-sufficient than its Cycladic neighbors. It grows its own food, makes its own cheese and wine, and still cuts marble, so tourism is one part of the island’s economy among several.

This guide is for women 50 and over who travel solo. It covers which places to stay suit a woman arriving alone on a late ferry into Naxos Town, which tavernas make a table for one easy, from the Agios Georgios front to the plateia in Halki, and where to find company or quiet.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Restaurant Types and Dining Customs

Ouzeries: places for ouzo (the anise-flavored spirit) and meze, small plates of cheese, olives, grilled octopus, squid and salad; a meze spread can be a full dinner or a light one.

Psistaria: grills for meat and fish, where you choose the meat or fish and the sides; Lefto’s at Agios Prokopios is the counter-service version, with souvlaki and kebabs.

Kafeneio: a coffeehouse for Greek coffee, ouzo and sometimes a snack, and a place to sit and watch village life; the kafeneia ringing the plane-tree square in Filoti are the classic example.

Restaurants: more formal rooms with table service, often with international dishes beside Greek ones and higher prices; Scirocco, off the main square in Naxos Town, is one.
