Naples
Alone

Horns, balcony voices and laundry strung across the lanes make Naples loud and dense, with espresso, diesel and sea air in the alleys. Blistered pizza and Roman daily life at the archaeological museum repay the noise.

SAMPLE

Naples Awaits

Naples is loud, dense and fast. Cars, scooters and delivery vans share the lanes without signaling, horns and voices carry from balconies and open windows, and laundry hangs across the streets. Espresso, diesel, sea air and something sulfurous mix in the alleys.

Colors are everywhere: blue shutters, faded yellow façades, dark gray stone and white marble trim. Buildings stack upward at no uniform height, and graffiti and street art cover nearly every surface below the third story, some of it territorial tagging, some of it serious social or political work, and some of it beautiful enough to photograph.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

How Naples Dining Works

Pizza places are the easiest: you sit, order and eat, one of perhaps 20 people doing the same thing, with no service rituals to manage.

Tandem, in the Centro Storico, is built around ragù Napoletano on pasta (mid-priced). The short menu removes most of the decisions, which suits a lunch on your own: you order, you eat, you leave.

Cala La Pasta, a small, informal restaurant on Via dei Tribunali, serves fresh pasta and Neapolitan dishes with table service and takeout. It is inexpensive and popular, so an earlier meal is the calmer way in. It is closed on Tuesdays.

Taverna Santa Chiara, at Via Santa Chiara 6 across from the Santa Chiara cloister, is a moderately priced sit-down option in the old city; ask about a table for one when you book.
