A City That Takes Order Personally

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, and it is not Berlin.

Berlin is Prussia: rational, outward-facing and historically fractured, the national capital and the seat of power.

Munich is Bavaria: Catholic, orderly without coldness and wealthy. It has world-class art and does not talk about it constantly, and it drinks beer in gardens with thousands of strangers as a matter of course. It was heavily bombed in the war and rebuilt in its old image.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Where Not to Eat

The restaurants ringing Marienplatz trade on the address, and the food and the prices both show it. The tell is consistent: a laminated menu in five languages, photographs of the dishes, a man outside encouraging you in, and a terrace pointed at the town hall rather than at anything worth looking at across the table.

Five minutes’ walk fixes it. The Augustiner Klosterwirt behind the Frauenkirche and the Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal both do proper Bavarian cooking; the Viktualienmarkt stalls, three minutes south, will feed you well for half the money; and Augustiner am Dom, described in Evening & After Dark, is the beer hall to choose over the famous one.
