The Island in Three Images

Milos reveals itself through contrasts. At Sarakiniko, wind and water have carved white volcanic rock into smooth, lunar shapes. An hour later, in Klima or Mandrakia, painted wooden boathouses line the waterfront, doubled in still water. Inland, the roads run through green valleys and small farming settlements that few visitors reach.

Milos is developed enough to serve visitors well and small enough to remain itself. The Venus de Milo was found here, and the island has grown at its own pace rather than following Santorini’s.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Dining Alone and Restaurant Culture

The Greek restaurant experience is built around social dining: tables of family and friends eating together. Tables for one are less traditional here than in some Western countries, but tourism has made them ordinary.

In Adamas, Plaka and Pollonia a table for one is ordinary, and you will be seated and served without having to explain. For a good table, arrive near the start of dinner service, when the choice of seats is widest, and ask for one at the edge of the terrace or facing the water; “éna átomo” (one person) is all the Greek it takes. Order a starter and a main rather than a spread of mezze meant for sharing, or ask whether half portions are possible.
