A City That Changed Europe

Walk through the Holstentor, the red brick gate at the entrance to Lübeck’s Old Town, into what is often described as the most powerful commercial center of medieval Northern Europe. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries Lübeck led the Hanseatic League, the merchant network that ran Baltic trade for the better part of two centuries. Salt, grain, timber, fish, furs and amber flowed through its warehouses, and that wealth built the city that survives today.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

How Lübeck Dining Works

Lübeck is a port and trading city long used to feeding people passing through, and its counters and lunch menus make a table for one easy to find.

Some specific tactics. Reserve a counter or bar seat where one is offered; Yume Ramen and Fischkonzept, named later in The Pleasures of the Table, are built around them. Look for places with a Mittagstisch (the daily lunch menu) for value and ease. Solo bookings at lunch are particularly easy and the atmosphere is calmer than at dinner.

The regional specialties worth seeking are Labskaus (the heavy sailor’s dish of corned beef mashed with potatoes and beetroot, served with pickled herring, traditional Baltic and not for everyone but worth experiencing once); the various Räucherfisch (smoked Baltic fish: eel, mackerel, herring); the lamb and game dishes that the surrounding Schleswig-Holstein countryside provides.
