Why Lake Garda

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, a long crescent of water between the Alps and the flat farmland of the Po valley, with three regions meeting on its shores: Lombardy on the west, Veneto on the east, and the Trentino area at the northern tip. That geography is why the lake feels like several places end to end: a lemon-growing south that could pass for the edge of the Mediterranean, and a steep, windy north that looks like a fjord.

This is a region book, not a city guide. The lake has no capital, only a ring of small towns: Sirmione, Desenzano, Salò, Gardone Riviera, Limone sul Garda, Riva del Garda, Malcesine, Garda, Bardolino, Peschiera del Garda. Much of the planning is choosing which one or two to make your base, so read Where to Stay and Town by Town before you book.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Dining Alone on the Lake

Lunch is the easier meal to eat alone if you want company of a kind without asking for it, since terrace tables face the water and the passing crowd, not each other, and people-watching makes a natural companion to the meal.

Dinner in the smaller towns runs quieter by comparison, because much of the lake’s evening shifts toward the passeggiata and a drink, not a long seated meal once the sun goes down. Arriving early in the dinner service, before the room fills, generally gets a solo diner a better table and more attentive service than arriving at the peak. A counter seat, where one exists, is a comfortable default; and a book is welcome.
