SAMPLE

Lake Como Awaits

Lake Como draws people back again and again. Step off the train in Como and the water runs north toward the mountains, with a string of small towns along it joined by frequent ferries. This guide is written for women 50 and over who travel solo, and the lake suits that kind of independent exploration: a woman alone on a ferry deck, a café terrace or a lakeside path draws no particular notice.

The physical beauty is part of the draw, but not all of it. Lake Como is famous enough to have frequent boats, trains and buses, and small enough that you are never swallowed by it. You can ride the funicular up to Brunate and hear nothing but wind, then come back down to Piazza Cavour and the ordinary life of a working town.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Safe at Night

Ferries run until the evening, so check the last boat back before you go out. Around Como station, use an official white taxi booked from inside rather than walking, and share your trip with someone at home. The support line for women is listed just above, under If you need support.

Trust your instincts about specific people and situations. If something feels off, you don’t owe anyone politeness at the cost of your safety: leaving, declining firmly, or asking staff or other travelers for help are all appropriate. Keep your phone charged, tell someone at home your rough plans and check in every few days; on a hiking or late-ferry day, send your route and expected return before you set out.
