SAMPLE

Ghent in Brief

Bruges is concentrated heritage: one of the best-preserved medieval cores in Europe, compact and photogenic. Its days can be busy with visitors, but its canals go quiet once the day-trippers leave on the last trains. It suits a traveler who wants beauty and stillness above everything else.

Ghent is a working university city that is also medieval and full of good food. Students cycling to class and eating cheap meals keep the streets lively into the evening and keep prices in check. If you want art, food and nightlife in a working city, Ghent is your trip; if you want heritage and quiet, Bruges is. They sit under half an hour apart by train, so you needn’t choose.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

How Ghent Dining Works

You can sit at a restaurant table alone and be served as a diner in your own right. You won’t be seated at a small corner table out of the way. You’ll be seated as you request, at whatever table suits you. The premise is that you came to eat.

This comes partly from the university culture: a city with this many students has a large population of people who eat on their own.

You can eat at the bar of a restaurant or a beer bar, at a fine-dining room, or at a casual neighborhood place; the treatment is the same in all three.

The restaurants in Patershol are small, ranging from casual to upscale. The rooms are tightly packed, so you may well overhear the next table; that closeness cuts both ways, so ask for a wall or window table if you want more privacy.
