Antwerp Awaits

Walk out onto the Keyserlei and the broad avenue leads toward the Meir, the main shopping street. The city itself lives in the neighborhoods radiating from the Grote Markt. They include the narrow medieval streets south of the cathedral, the Art Nouveau mansions of Zurenborg, the converted warehouses of Het Eilandje, and the Zuid, where Belgian designers who show in Milan and Paris keep their studios and flagship stores.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Dining Alone

Brasseries and bistros. Tables are close together and service is quick: three courses with wine take about 90 minutes, and a single main with a glass is just as welcome. Chicon and Bistro Ernest are two (see Restaurant Recommendations by Neighborhood).

Wine bars. Ta-nnin in the Zuid and the wine room above the Luddites bookshop on the Hopland pour by the glass and serve small plates. Take a bar seat; the staff will talk wine if you ask.

Beer cafes. In a brown cafe like Oud Arsenaal or a brewpub like Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie, people sit for an hour over one beer; a woman alone with a Westmalle Dubbel and a book is part of the furniture.
