SAMPLE

Amsterdam Awaits

Women of all ages walk alone here, eat dinner alone and spend afternoons in museums, cafés or beside the water. A table for one at dinner, or a brown-café seat late in the evening with a drink and a notebook, is an ordinary sight.

You can move through Amsterdam entirely in English, in shops, restaurants, hotels and museums (see Language, in Practical Matters). A “dank je wel” is still welcome, even when the reply comes back in English.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Modern Dutch Cuisine & Counter Dining

Café Restaurant Van Kerkwijk (Nes 41, near Dam Square, www.vankerkwijk.com; mid-priced) is a small, informal restaurant with a changing menu that staff explain at the table. It serves from late morning into the evening and takes no reservations, so go early or allow for a wait at busy dinner hours. A useful central choice for a solo lunch or dinner.

Rijsel (Marcusstraat 52B, Oost, www.rijsel.com, higher-priced) cooks French-Belgian food in a former school building. It serves dinner on weekdays, publishes its menu and pricing online, and releases reservations on a schedule, so book ahead. The focused menu makes it a straightforward sit-down meal for one.

Visaandeschelde (Scheldeplein 4, Zuid, www.visaandeschelde.nl, higher-priced) is a full-service seafood restaurant near the RAI, open for lunch and dinner. It is a polished, higher-priced meal rather than a casual stop, so book ahead, especially for dinner, and look at the current menu first.
