At a Glance

The Rhône splits the city. The Old Town (Vieille Ville) climbs the high left (south) bank around the cathedral, and downtown and the business districts spread north toward the train station. Eaux-Vives lies along the southeastern lakeshore, Carouge across the Arve River to the south, and Plainpalais just southwest of the center. Pâquis sits on the right bank along the northern lakeshore, and the Nations Quarter on the heights to the northwest.

You can walk from the Old Town to the lake in under twenty minutes and to Plainpalais in about fifteen, so a mental map of the center takes a day or two.
