SAMPLE

Why San Diego?

San Diego sits between crowded tourism and local life. For a woman traveling alone, and especially for one 50 and over, the city lets you move at your own pace and feel unremarkable doing it. Balboa Park’s museums, the cliff coves of La Jolla, and the neighborhoods of Little Italy and North Park are all within reach, and each is easy to enjoy alone.

Women on their own are an ordinary sight in the neighborhoods, on the beaches, in the museums, and in the restaurants.

San Diego suits people who want solitude without loneliness. Its neighborhoods have distinct personalities, so you can pick surroundings that match your mood on a given morning: the Gaslamp for energy, North Park for everyday neighborhood life, La Jolla for the coves. The weather removes the barrier that keeps many travelers indoors in winter elsewhere in the country.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Solitude, Pace and Eating Alone

Small routines help: the same North Park café each morning, the same Little Italy walk each evening.

Eating alone is where many travelers feel most self-conscious, and where San Diego makes things easiest. Counter and bar seats are the secret. A seat at a counter, such as the corner counter of Tacos El Gordo on F Street, or a kitchen-facing bar turns a table for one into a perch with something to watch. Off-peak hours help too: an early dinner at five-thirty or a late lunch at two means a calmer room and more time from the staff. If you would rather have a quiet table, bring something to read and ask for one.
