SAMPLE

Boston Awaits

Boston is a city you can read on foot. It is compact, dense, and built to a human scale, on streets older than the car. The streets do not follow a grid. They follow the paths that cattle and colonial merchants wore into the peninsula three hundred years ago, and they have resisted every later attempt at rationalization. This is a city that refused to be redesigned for the automobile, and the result is one of the most walkable urban environments in the United States.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

How Boston Dining Works

One of the practical advantages of Boston is that eating alone here is ordinary. Many people dine alone regularly, particularly at lunch, when students and professionals eat at places such as Flour Bakery + Cafe in Back Bay. In the evening it is less common but still unremarkable, and the room treats a woman at a table on her own as a diner having a meal.

The service style is brisk and businesslike rather than solicitous, which in practice means you are left to your meal.

Restaurant bar seating is the easiest option. Most restaurants have a bar where you can sit, eat, and watch the kitchen and the room. At Eventide, for instance, the counter and bar seating make a single place easy to find.
