Why This City Calls to Women Traveling Alone

Portland, Oregon sits where the Willamette River flows past forested hills into a metropolitan area with a strong sense of its own identity. This book is written for women traveling alone who are 50 and over, and Portland gives them something increasingly rare: a city that welcomes independence and solitude.

Portland does not demand that you couple up. Sit down at the counter of a Hawthorne cafe or wander into Powell’s, and nobody assumes you are there to meet someone or to tick a list.

Dining Notes

Portland’s liveliest Chinese and pan-Asian dining is in the Jade District along SE 82nd Avenue between Division and Powell, a car-oriented strip easiest to reach by bus or a short rideshare; go for lunch, when the bakeries and noodle houses are busiest.

Yalla, a Mediterranean smokehouse in the Multnomah Village neighborhood of southwest Portland, serves excellent smoked meats and mezze. There is outstanding Vietnamese food across the city, much of it from independent, family-run operations.

Eating at a restaurant bar is often more comfortable than sitting at a table for one. Portland’s bar culture around food is strong. Many of the city’s best kitchens, Canard among them, keep counter or bar seating where a solo diner is at ease, and the bar becomes a social space without requiring you to be social if you don’t want to be.
