Why Portland, Maine

Portland doesn’t announce itself with fanfare. Instead it gives you something more practical: a place where a woman alone feels she belongs, with independent bookstores such as Longfellow Books, and bars where locals and visitors share a counter.

This guide is written for women traveling alone, 50 and over, and Portland suits that traveler at a small scale: oysters at the bar at Eventide, an hour in the Portland Museum of Art, a Casco Bay Lines crossing to Peaks Island, a slow walk along the Eastern Promenade. It is a working harbor city rather than a party destination, with fishing boats at Portland Pier, and the food scene from Fore Street to Miyake is serious.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Safety and Basic Logistics

Theft is the more common risk here than violent crime, so the cautions that matter are the ordinary ones below: the lit blocks of Congress Street and the Old Port at night, bags kept close, and a taxi called from a restaurant when the walk back feels wrong.

Stick to the lit, populated blocks of Congress Street and the Old Port rather than empty alleys. Don’t flash expensive items. If a person or an area feels wrong, move toward the nearest lit restaurant or bar and ask staff for a taxi. Carry your phone and know how to get back.

The Old Port, Congress Street and the Arts District are well-lit at night and have foot traffic even late in the evening, with people, restaurants and bars in public view. More residential neighborhoods toward the edges of downtown are quieter, with less foot traffic.
