What Makes Palm Springs Different

Two facts about who lives here shape a visit more than any attraction does: Palm Springs has one of the highest proportions of retirees of any city its size in the country, and it has been, for decades, one of the most openly LGBTQ+ small cities in the United States. The result is a town comfortable with people who do not fit a conventional family template, which shows up in small ways; The Solo Woman’s Palm Springs says what that means for a woman on her own.

The other two facts are logistical, and both are covered properly further on. Summer heat is the first planning fact (When to Come and How to Arrive). And Palm Springs was built for cars: the downtown core is walkable enough that a stay based there needs no vehicle, but the moment the plan extends to Joshua Tree, the tramway or the wider valley you are choosing between a rental car, rideshare and organized tours. Practical Matters lays out that choice, and it is worth making before you arrive.

Dining Alone

Solo dining in Palm Springs rarely carries the faint awkwardness it can elsewhere. Restaurants here, from Workshop Kitchen + Bar to the taco counters on Palm Canyon Drive, treat a table for one as ordinary, and bar seating is widely available and often better than a table for a diner who wants a view of the room. If a room only takes larger parties for its most in-demand seatings, a note on the booking or a phone call usually resolves it.

The same ease extends to breakfast at Koffi, lunch and the many restaurants with outdoor patios, where a table for one facing the mountains is not a lesser seat. Bringing a book or a notebook tends to help more than trying to look occupied on a phone.
