Why Queenstown

Queenstown sells itself on adrenaline, and the marketing is not wrong so much as incomplete. It is a resort town wrapped around Lake Wakatipu, and it has spent sixty years perfecting the business of separating visitors from their money in exchange for a thrill. Bungy jumping was commercialized here. Jet boats scream up a canyon a few miles from the center of town.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Dining Alone

Lunch is the easiest meal to take alone: the cafés on Buckingham Street in Arrowtown, or Cookie Time Cookie Bar (18 Camp Street) in town. For dinner, Yonder (14 Church Street) and Bella Cucina (6 Brecon Street) are moderately priced sit-down rooms in town; book ahead in season and ask for a window table.

Booking ahead, where a restaurant takes reservations, means you are seated as a confirmed guest. Bringing something to occupy the gaps, a book or a notebook, removes any pressure to fill the silence with your phone.

In Arrowtown, Postmasters Kitchen + Bar (54 Buckingham Street) and The Fork and Tap (51 Buckingham Street) are easy rooms for one; in Glenorchy, the pub at the Glenorchy Hotel is the village’s sit-down meal.
