SAMPLE

A City Built for the Curious Traveler

The city’s physical location shapes the experience. Built on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City has dramatic topography that is apparent in every street. This is not a flat city you can comprehend from a map. The elevation changes, the views, and the river, sometimes frozen and sometimes flowing toward the Atlantic, set the tenor of each season.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

How Quebec City Dining Works

Timing: lunch is the simplest meal to eat alone, and many restaurants offer a prix fixe at moderate prices.

Bar seating: a counter gives you an edge to the room and staff within easy speaking distance.

Café culture: breakfast and lunch at cafés such as Paillard and Le Buffet de l’Antiquaire are low-stakes ways to begin.

Making a reservation: Should you prefer to eat at a specific restaurant in the evening, call ahead and make a reservation. Use Google Translate if necessary. A simple “Bonjour, je voudrais réserver une table pour une personne à 19h00” (Hello, I would like to reserve a table for one person at 7 p.m.) is sufficient. Making a reservation means the restaurant is expecting you, you are not taking up space accidentally, and you will be seated promptly.
