A City That Survived Everything and Reads Better Alone

You may well spend an evening in a Prague beer hall alone, reading Kafka while Czech businessmen discuss politics in the corner. Prague makes sense to women who travel alone, and particularly to women 50 and over. Nobody blinks at a woman alone with a beer and a book here. It is the default.

Prague is sold as a storybook city, medieval and frozen in time, and many visitors arrive expecting nothing else.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE

Safety for Solo Women Travelers

Pickpocketing is the primary crime affecting tourists. It is concentrated in specific areas: Charles Bridge (especially in summer), Old Town Square (especially at peak hours), tram line 22 (which goes to the castle), and Wenceslas Square. Pickpocketing is usually done by teams: one or two people distract, another removes your wallet or phone. The protection is simple: do not carry valuable items in back pockets or unattended bags. Carry a small crossbody bag or money belt. Keep your phone and wallet in front pockets if possible. In crowded areas, hold your bag close to your body.

Official travel advisories specifically warn about pickpocketing on trams serving Prague Castle, and tram 22 is the busiest of them. That is a reason to keep your bag in front of you and your phone out of an open pocket, not a reason to avoid the one tram that takes you up the hill.
