A Walled City, Not a Postcard
Marrakech is exhilarating and tiring in roughly equal measure, and the two are not separable. The souks, Souk Semmarine and Souk des Teinturiers among them, reward wandering and punish rushing. The late-afternoon light turns the walls the color that gave the city its old nickname, and the call to prayer moves across the medina five times a day like weather. Plan for both halves of that.

Eating Alone in Marrakech
Marrakech is an easy city to eat well in on your own, once you understand the shape of its options: riad dinners built around a fixed or short menu, square-side stalls that run on volume and cash, rooftop cafés that expect a solo diner with a book, and a growing cluster of contemporary restaurants in Gueliz with full wine lists and modern menus. None of these formats requires company, and several of them, such as the counter stall and the rooftop table, are easier alone than in a group. The skill in Marrakech is not finding good food; it is telling the venues built for a resident’s appetite from the ones built entirely around a tour bus schedule.
