SAMPLE
Pale limestone, blue water and Valletta’s fortifications give Malta a distinctive outline. The islands offer short distances on the map, but hills, traffic and sea crossings shape the days once you arrive.
Valletta and the harbor towns, the temples, Gozo and Comino all fit one stay, with bus, ferry and heat decisions shaping each day. A beach day fits as readily as a day of museums.
The first surprise is the size. You can drive across the entire main island, from Valletta on the east coast to Ċirkewwa at the north-western tip, in forty-five minutes on a clear run, though traffic, roadworks and indirect bus routes often stretch a real journey well beyond that. The prehistoric temples of Ħaġar Qim are about half an hour from Valletta by car, and rather longer by bus. The ferry to Gozo takes twenty-five minutes. Comino’s Blue Lagoon is accessible within an hour.

PRACTICAL SAMPLE
Diar il-Bniet is outside Dingli, in the Dingli plateau area. It’s a farmhouse: stone walls, simple interior, book a table through its website (you’ll need a car or taxi). The restaurant offers a seasonal à-la-carte menu, including Maltese rabbit dishes. Check the menu and opening days before making the trip, since the schedule varies by day and season.
Nenu the Artisan Baker in Valletta makes ftira daily and serves simple meals: usually pasta, usually excellent. It is tiny and busy. It takes table reservation requests online, and for same-day bookings it asks you to call; without a booking, expect a wait.
Ta’ Kris in Gżira is slightly more formal than Nenu but still committed to traditional food and Maltese ingredients. Rabbit appears regularly, and so does fish. Booking advised.
