Is Solo Travel Safe After 50?

The short answer

For most of the cities women ask us about, yes, and "safe" is almost the wrong word to fix on. The real question isn't whether a place is dangerous; it's whether you know how to move through it. That's a skill, not a roll of the dice, and you already have more of it than you've been led to believe.

What actually keeps you safe

Practical habits can support your plans. Adapt them to the destination and your circumstances:

• Tell one person your rough itinerary, and check in once a day.
• Keep your bag on your inside shoulder and your phone out of your back pocket: pickpockets work crowds and busy transit, not shadowy alleys.
• Book a room you can reach without a long, dim walk after dinner.
• Honor the quiet "no, thank you" early, before it has to become a loud one.

None of that requires nerve. It requires a little planning, done once, so the trip itself can be unguarded.

Useful safety advice is specific to the place and the plans you are making. Check official travel advice and local transport information, and adjust your plans when conditions change. Your comfort matters: choosing a taxi, joining a tour, or staying in for an evening is your decision.
