For most of the cities women ask us about, yes — and "safe" is almost the wrong word to fix on. The real question isn't whether a place is dangerous; it's whether you know how to move through it. That's a skill, not a roll of the dice, and you already have more of it than you've been led to believe.
What actually keeps you safe
Not fear. Habits. A handful of small, unglamorous routines do nearly all the work:
- Tell one person your rough itinerary, and check in once a day.
- Keep your bag on your inside shoulder and your phone out of your back pocket — pickpockets work crowds and busy transit, not shadowy alleys.
- Book a room you can reach without a long, dim walk after dinner.
- Honor the quiet "no, thank you" early, before it has to become a loud one.
None of that requires nerve. It requires a little planning, done once, so the trip itself can be unguarded.
The fear tax
Most safety advice aimed at women is fear dressed up as care, and it charges you for the trip you haven't even taken — keeping you in the hotel, off the evening street, away from the meal you wanted. Awareness is a skill you sharpen; fear is a mood that costs you things. They are not the same, and you don't owe anyone the second one.
